INPD

Building on initiatives for knowledge production in the field of child and adolescent mental health, the National Institute of Developmental Psychiatry for Children and Adolescents (INPD), established in 2009, is at the forefront of studies that suggest that mental disorders are linked to brain development changes and can be reversed with interventions (including during the intrauterine period).

Mental disorders, which begin in early life stages, are among the main factors that lead to disability and result in healthcare expenses. However, epidemiological data from our research team show that only 20% of Brazilian children with mental health conditions have access to appropriate care. With this in mind, INPD undertakes initiatives, research and projects aimed at developing a significant body of knowledge in the mental health field and providing leading-edge education in developmental psychiatry, also covering resource-limited regions of Brazil.

    • To conduct observational and experimental studies in developmental psychiatry;
    • To develop innovative research methods in developmental psychiatry;
    • To create technologies designed to prevent mental disorders in primary and secondary care settings;
    • To influence the education of future physicians using the framework of developmental psychiatry as a guide;
    • To establish new knowledge-generation hubs and centers of excellence in child and adolescent psychiatry across Brazil;
    • To provide remote supervision and knowledge dissemination using medical digital tools, such as telemedicine.
    • Preventive medicine and evidence-based interventions;
    • The national reference center for child and adolescent mental health;
    • An innovation hub for research and knowledge production, with deep ties to international reference centers.
    • Patient care (the needs of patients and their families guide our actions);
    • Transfer of knowledge (the knowledge generated by INPD is for everyone);
    • Sharing knowledge with healthcare professionals (the knowledge generated is shared through scientific articles and other communication channels);
    • Reliability (commitments made will be honored);
    • Diversity (INPD is open to the most diverse branches of knowledge that can be scientifically tested);
    • Dedication (the INPD team is committed to achieving its objectives);
    • Productivity (projects are completed, and research results are published in national and international journals).
